Abstract

This work aims to identify the factors affecting the adoption of agroforestry by farmers in the municipality of Igarapé-Acu, Para, Brazil. Interviews, group work, direct observation and photographic record: tools commonly used in participatory rural appraisal, such as were employed. The level of agroforestry
(SAF) in Igarapé-Acu, is still very low compared to the universe of family farming. This adoption is influenced by factors related to personal and cultural characteristics of the farmers, so that it is mostly done by men. Factors such as level of education of the farmer,
age, lot size and funding, not interfere with the adoption of FAS in the study area. However, the minimization problems, such as lack of technical guidance, incidence of pests and diseases, low fertility of cultivated soils, can increase the adoption of these systems.
