Abstract

The state of São Paulo presents extensive area under Argisol that is destined to the cultivation of perennial crops such as citrus, rubber trees and pasture. The objective of this study is to evaluate the changes in physical and chemical properties of an Ultisol Red-Yellow, caused by citrus cultivation (10 years), rubber (20 years) and Braquiária (15 years) in relation to native vegetation (cerrado) New Horizonte, Brazil. Samples were collected in layers of 0-0.1; 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.4 m, with 4 repetitions. Land use with citrus resulted in higher content of clay and organic matter decline and phosphorus in the surface layer, the partial loss of this layer of soil, exposing the Bt horizon. The land use to grazing was more efficient in maintaining the organic matter of the topsoil, compared with cultivation of perennial crops such as rubber and citrus. The use of the soil decreased the concentration of potassium, regardless of the implanted culture.
