Abstract

Agroforestry systems (AFS) emerged as an alternative to slash and burn agriculture practiced in the Amazon. The objective of the study was to analyze the influence of socioeconomic characteristics of farmers in the adoption of commercial AFS. The research was conducted in Bragança, Pará State. During data collection, structured interview and direct observation were employed, both are from Rapid Rural Appraisal tools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear correlation analysis. 53 farm families with SAFs were identified in 19 rural communities. The socioeconomic characteristics identified in this study as the origin of farmers; local organization; age; level of education; land tenure; lot size and the SAF; family labor and income generation, influenced the adoption of commercial agroforestry systems in Bragança. The family labor represents the greatest expression in the work developed in the production unit. Man develops the main productive activities and is primarily responsible for the adoption of these systems. The SAF, in general, are important to the economy of farmers. However, some public policies are needed for these systems become sustainable, the socioeconomic point of view. They must enlarge the areas of commercial agroforestry systems to assure efficient technical assistance to farmers, to tailor products to the consumer market generated, empower farmers in relation to management of agroforestry systems to increase income generated by these systems, and ultimately empower farmers on projects for funding.
