Abstract

The castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) is a very sensitive crop to weed competition and hence can be reduced economic yield. The use of herbicides can be a viable alternative. However, some herbicides can cause phytotoxicity on germination process and the development of the plant. The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity and efficiency of inhibiting herbicides cell division and photosynthesis, respectively, in the culture of castor bean. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications. The treatments consisted of control (hand weeding), 2.4 and 4.0 L ha-1 of the herbicide diuron, and 5.0 and 7.0 L ha-1 of the herbicide alachlor. The herbicide diuron can be recommended for the cultivation of castor bean, yet the herbicide alachlor is not recommended as it affects the germination process and reduce the rate of speed of seedling emergence of castor bean.
