2:1 phyllosilicates with hydroxy between layers in soils: current state of knowledge and research perspectives
Abstract
2:1 phyllosilicates with hydroxy interlayers (HE 2:1) have the potential to contribute in studies and technologies connected to the ground. As products of weathering and pedogenesis, can be used as indicators of (paleo) environment. The modification of their surface properties (cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, expansiveness, etc..) Through controlled synthesis and deposition of polymers in the interlayers (pillaring) is still unexplored in agricultural technologies (controlled release of nutrients, for example) and environmental (retention of heavy metals, for example). This paper aims to present a summary of the major breakthroughs achieved with the study and application of HE 2:1 minerals in industrial processes, which are mainly used as catalysts, and the possibilities of applying this knowledge and these techniques in soils.
