Operational performance of forest machines according to the number of days of the work schedule

Keywords: emission of pollutants, ergonomics, forwarder, harvester

Abstract

Work schedules with large numbers of days can reduce operator productivity, increase fuel consumption, and intensify the occurrence of occupational diseases. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the number of days in the work schedule of harvester and forwarder operators on technical, economic, environmental and ergonomics parameters. The research was carried out in the southern region of the state of Bahia, Brazil, in a forest stand with an average volume of 0.18 m³ per tree. The research was carried out on the 4x2 scale of work, with the information collected in the first shift, which started at 6:00 am and ended at 3:00 pm. Throughout the working day, productivity, energy demand, production cost, amount of carbon dioxide and fatigue were analyzed. The number of days on the work schedule significantly influenced the values of productivity, energy demand, production cost, and carbon dioxide. The lowest values of productivity of the harvester, 18.30 m³ h-1, and forwarder, 67.62 m³ h-1, were obtained on the fourth day of the workday. The use of a three-day harvester and forwarder operator work schedule makes forest harvesting operations more economically and environmentally sustainable.
