Powdery galls on two species of Lauraceae in Mato Grosso do Sul
Abstract
Drepanoconis larviformis has been identified in several countries, causing diseases in species of the Lauraceae family. Leaves, flowers, fruits and stems of adult trees of Nectandra megapotamica and N. hihua exhibiting a whitish powdery gall in Dourados county. Parts of the plants with the symptoms were collected for microscopic observation. The lenght, width and cell wall of the spores associated with symptons were measured in 50 randomly chosen. Spores were hyaline, septate, with thick walls and rough surface, enlarged and with an evident basal scar, usually curved and presenting the appearance of a larva. The dimensions of the spores ranged from 51,44 - 89,02μm and 28,59 - 44,98μm. Cell walls were 8, 27 - 15,12μm thick. Spores had 3 to 7 septa and were identified as basidiospores of the fungus D. larviformis. This is the first report of its occurrence in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul and possibly in the Cerrado region of Brazil attacking N. megapotamica and N. hihua.
