Abstract

Performed the mass selection in higher assai palms for fruit production in the Germplasm Collection of Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, Belém, PA. Selection was applied for two strategies in the short and long term, based on the total number of clusters and the total yield by average of three years of production (1996, 1997 and 1998), selecting all plants with greater than or equal to the average collection (original population) values. Two morphological characters, type of stem and staining of mature fruits were also used in the selection. During the study period, 696 plants produced clusters with differential selection of clusters 2.9 and 6.64 kg of fruits per plant / year and heritability estimates of 0.44 and 0.55, respectively. In general, the plants showed multiple stems 81% and 99% violet fruits. The mass selection was effective for both strategies with significant genetic gains of 4.7 and 10.1 kg bunches of fruit and bunches of 1.2 and 2.7 kg of fruit in the short and long term, respectively . The 25 selected assai palms in the collection should produce improved seeds to compose the population.
